India has proposed levies on some US goods in response to Washington’s duties on steel and aluminum, marking its first retaliation against President Donald Trump’s tariff regime, even as the two countries move closer to finalizing a trade deal.

India informed the WTO that it would impose tariffs on U.S. goods in response to steel and aluminum levies. New Delhi estimates the U.S. tariffs to be $7.6 billion worth of Indian exports. The move comes amid sensitive trade negotiations between India and the U.S.
